It is no secret that the hotel industry results in a lot of waste, and finding ways to reduce environmental harm hotels have is a priority for us. From being more conscious and careful of where products are sourced, to implementing small measures that make a big difference, we have worked hard to alter the way we work to reduce environmental harm.
What Does It Mean for a Hotel to Be Environmentally Responsible?
For a hotel to be environmentally responsible, it should work to minimise the negative impact it has on the environment by implementing resource-conserving practices. This could include reducing water use, recycling, ethical sourcing, using eco-friendly products, and so much more. It ultimately comes down to not only providing a great place for guests to rest their weary heads for the night, but also offering accommodation and services that do not harm the planet we all share.
Sustainability and environmentally-friendly practices can take lots of different forms, and most of it happens behind the scenes—which means that guests will probably never even know! Working to reduce environmental harm hotels do is often done quietly, but it is always something that you can ask about when visiting a hotel to find out more about what they have implemented if you are curious.
How Crown Group Hotels Reduce Environmental Harm Through Procurement
Unsustainable production practices linked to many everyday products and ingredients can harm biodiversity around the world and contribute to pollution and other issues. From introducing non-native and potentially even dangerous species to areas, clearing native vegetation for monocultures, or relying heavily on chemical fertilisers and pesticides, there is untold damage that can be done by a handful of crops.
Here at Crown Group of Hotels, we partner with local producers and shops to reduce the damage being done by different products, reduce pollution, and support local where viable.
Three key parts of our sustainable procurement policy include:
- Prioritising Certified Goods – where viable, we aim to choose items bearing recognized eco-labels
- Screening Our Supply Chain – we require suppliers to demonstrate how they minimise environmental harm
- Avoiding High-Risk Commodities – we phase out the procurement of goods known to drive habitat destruction (e.g. unsustainably sourced palm oil, sugar from high-impact plantations, single-use plastics)
How Do Guests Support Sustainability by Staying With Us?
To help reduce environmental harm hotels can have, guests can choose more sustainable practices at our hotels, and in their everyday lives. If you want to help, we would love for you to do three simple things when staying at our hotels, and four easy things while out exploring the city.
To Keep Things Sustainable, We Ask That You Help Out
While staying with us, we ask that you take small measures to ensure that your stay is sustainable. These small measures include saving water where possible, conserving energy, and reducing waste by using the facilities we have for refilling your own water bottles, turning off electronics when not in use, and recycling what you can while avoiding the use of single-use plastics.
Here are three simple ways you can keep things sustainable when staying with us:
- Save Water Where Possible – bring your own bottle to the water refill stations in the breakfast room, and hang up towels to dry if you are happy to re-use them; if you would like your towel replaced, please leave it on the floor
- Conserve Energy – please turn off all electronics before you go to bed to conserve energy. Our rooms run on a card-operated system that switches off non-essential electricity automatically when the key is removed. Please ensure that you remove your card when you leave the room
- Reduce Waste – every room will have recycling bins to make use of, as well as bins throughout the hotel. Please ensure that you sort your recycling and general waste, and dispose of them appropriately. Avoid the use of single-use plastics wherever possible, please!
Sustainable Practices to You Can Do When Exploring London
We encourage you to take your sustainable practices beyond your stay at our hotels (or, any hotels), but respecting the areas of nature around the city, supporting local businesses, using sustainable transport, and following health and safety guidelines.
To help make your trip to London sustainable, we encourage you to:
- Respect Nature in the City – take only photographs, leave only footprints. Please take any litter with you, and remain on the pathways in public parks to protect the plants and wildlife
- Support Local Businesses – spending money at local businesses keeps the economy alive and the community thriving. Keep an eye out for independent stores like bookshops, bakeries, and all kinds of artisan stalls around every corner to support local
- Use Sustainable Transport – London is full of sustainable public transport, so leave your car behind. Take the Tube, buses, a Santander Bike, Uber boats, or even walk to reduce your carbon footprint and enjoy what the city has to offer. Feel free to ask our concierge for Oyster cards, bike-share stations nearby, or Tube maps to use in your visit!
- Follow Health and Safety Guidelines – follow health and safety measures wherever you go; some locations may still have COVID-19 measures in place including mask use, hand-sanitising stations, and social distancing markers
