Hotels require vast amounts of resources to operate efficiently and provide guests with a comfortable experience. However, many hotels overlook the impact they have on the environment and remain unaware of the changes they can make to improve it. At Crown Group of Hotels, we have taken the time to review the products we use and the suppliers we work with, examining how these choices affect sustainability. As a result, we have implemented meaningful changes to reduce our carbon footprint and help educate our guests along the way.

What Are Everyday Hotel Products, and Why Do They Matter?

What Are Everyday Hotel Products, and Why Do They Matter?

Everyday hotel products could include the various toiletries like soap or hair products, furniture, food items, printed materials, and more. These are found everywhere, but not all hotel products are made equal, and many of them contribute to pollution, landfills, and other issues that can be minimised with the proper effort.

The impact of hotel products on sustainability is significant, and even the smallest changes can make a meaningful difference. Why not join us in making these changes for the sake of the planet we all share?

How Do Hotel Products Affect Biodiversity and the Planet?

How Do Hotel Products Affect Biodiversity and the Planet?

When looking at the impact of hotel products on sustainability, we are all too aware of how everyday products and ingredients can harm biodiversity through unsustainable production practices. From clearing native vegetation for monocultures and introducing non-native species, to relying heavily on chemical fertilisers and pesticides, caution is needed when approaching a wide variety of products.

Food waste and packaging are also huge issues across many different areas, hotels included. Unfortunately, much of the packaging used for food is plastic, and it all finds its way to a landfill, where it sits and continues to harm the environment. Not only that, but factoring in the emissions from rom producing, transporting, and disposing of these products, the environmental footprint quickly grows.

What Is Crown Group of Hotels Doing Differently?

Understanding the impact of hotel products on sustainability, we have spent time creating a procurement policy that helps reduce our carbon footprint while supporting local businesses and communities. We actively avoid high-risk commodities that are linked to environmental issues such as deforestation and pollution. Instead, we prioritise eco-certified goods or items from trusted suppliers. We also aim to support local where viable because supporting nearby producers truly makes a difference. The quality is improved, and the environmental benefits are clear.

Because we care so deeply about environmental issues, we are also here to help educate visitors and anyone interested where we can. Not only that, but we have made it easier than ever for guests to practice sustainability, and provide everything needed to reduce your carbon footprint while you stay with us and beyond.

How Can Guests Help Reduce Their Impact?

As part of our Responsible Visitors Charter, we encourage all guests to take simple steps to protect our planet and support local communities. From conserving energy and saving water to reducing waste and choosing sustainable transport like public transport, walking, or cycling, you can make a huge impact without any compromises.

Below are seven easy things that you can do while staying in London to help with sustainability:

  • Conserve Energy – please turn off all electronics before you go to bed to conserve energy. All of our rooms run on a card-operated system that switches off non-essential electricity automatically when the key is removed. Please ensure that you remove your card when you leave the room
  • Save Water – bring your own bottle to the water refill stations in the breakfast room, and hang up towels to dry if you are happy to re-use them; if you would like your towel replaced, please leave it on the floor
  • Reduce Waste – every room will have recycling bins to make use of, as well as bins throughout the hotel. Please ensure that you sort your recycling and general waste, and dispose of them appropriately. Avoid the use of single-use plastics wherever possible, please!
  • Use Sustainable Transport – London is full of sustainable public transport, so leave your car behind. Take the Tube, buses, a Santander Bike, Uber boats, or even walk to reduce your carbon footprint and enjoy what the city has to offer. Feel free to ask our concierge for advice on bike-share stations nearby, Tube maps, or using contactless payment on buses and trains.
  • Follow Health and Safety Guidelines – follow health and safety measures wherever you go; some locations may still have COVID-19 measures in place including mask use, hand-sanitising stations, and social distancing markers
  • Support Local Businesses – spending money at local businesses keeps the economy alive and the community thriving. Keep an eye out for independent stores like bookshops, bakeries, and all kinds of artisan stalls around every corner to support local
  • Respect Spots of Nature – take only photographs, leave only footprints. Please take any litter with you, and remain on the pathways in public parks to protect the plants and wildlife

What You Don’t See Behind the Scenes

At Crown Group of Hotels, we are dedicated to keeping our properties sustainable. We conduct supplier screening, carry out waste audits, and make thoughtful decisions behind the scenes about the products on our premises. We take pride in our efforts and continue to make small, consistent changes to care for the planet and its future. This includes educating our guests about the hidden environmental costs of everyday items and taking active steps to reduce the overall impact these products have on the world.

Key steps that we take to maintain a rigorous, sustainable procurement policy include:

  • Screening Our Supply Chain – we require our suppliers to demonstrate how they minimise environmental harm, from raw-material sourcing through to finished products
  • Prioritising Certified Goods – wherever possible, we choose items bearing recognized eco-labels
  • Avoiding High-Risk Commodities – we are phasing out procurement of goods known to drive habitat destruction
